A tuxedo or blazer dress is appropriate for a range of occasions. Since classic tuxedo details–like satin detailing, defined lapels, fabric covered buttons, and more–are on tux dresses, too, that especially formal, special-occasion look carries over. The right fit for a blazer or tuxedo dress is pretty similar to the feel of a great-fitting suit jacket: sharp, snug shoulders, a contoured but not tight bust, and no pulling in the waist. For a dress, there should actually be a bit more room in the waist than a typical jacket to ensure comfortable, easy movement and to create a smooth silhouette down through the skirt, too. There’s plenty of room to add on chain necklaces, scarves, bold earrings, and more. For an edgier look, that’s the perfect place to start. 

But for a perfectly clean and still fashion-focused aesthetic, here’s how to style your tuxedo dress: go for a simple pair of neutral colored pumps or loafers, a small leather handbag, and, depending on the weather, sheer tights. That’s all you need!

A formal tuxedo dress is great for a black tie event, but since most tuxedo dresses are mini length, they are often best saved for formal dress codes, black tie optional events, cocktail attire, and more.

One aspect of true black tie attire for women is a full-length gown that hits the floor. So, a long tuxedo dress is just right, especially considering the formal satin accents. But, we wouldn’t recommend a mini tuxedo dress for a women’s black tie outfit unless you’re the bride or guest of honor (if you are, it’s perfectly appropriate, and you should wear exactly what you want!).

They’re very similar, but there are a few key differences between a tuxedo dress and a blazer dress. Think of it like comparing a suit jacket with a tuxedo jacket: a women’s suit can be more versatile but is more casual, whereas a female tuxedo is more formal and elevated.

A blazer dress will normally have one fabric type for the whole dress–that fabric might be a bit more relaxed–and the fit might be slightly less tailored. Blazer dresses are great for work and fashion. A tuxedo dress, on the other hand, has satin accents at the lapel, pockets, and buttons, and it tends to have a slightly more structured shape. These are perfect to wear for more elevated events.
