Men’s Black Tie Attire & Tuxedos

A tuxedo is a step up in formality. The key differences? Satin details on the lapels, buttons, and waistband on the pants, and a classic men’s tux typically paired with a bow tie and formal accessories. A suit is more versatile–for anything from business outfits to cocktail attire and more–and doesn’t include those satin finishes. When the dress code says black tie, a tuxedo is the go-to.

Black tie attire is typically worn to evening weddings, galas, upscale parties, and any event where the dress code calls for elevated formalwear. If the invitation says black tie, think tuxedo, white tuxedo shirt or French cuff shirt, black bow tie, and polished shoes. When in doubt, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than under, and it never hurts to stick with the classics.

A tuxedo should feel sharp and structured without being restrictive. The jacket should fit snugly at the shoulders with a clean line down through the waist. You want a close fit without any tightness, and the button should fasten, sitting near to your body, without creating pulling in the fabric.
